Chayah Kalahari Project NPC is a registered South African non-profit on Farm Lentlandspan in the Askham district, about seven hundred metres from Rea Farmstead. They take in Kalahari meerkats that have come out of the illegal pet trade, rehabilitate them, and put them back into the veld. Their own site puts eleven years behind them, three thousand nine hundred and sixty meerkats released, a ninety percent release rate, six months in rehabilitation and twelve months of monitoring after each release. Those are their figures, and they are worth reading as theirs.
This is a working rescue and not a petting zoo. The animals are there in order to go home again, and the centre is frank that the visits are what pays for the work. Their own visit page offers a close-up meerkat encounter, a three course dinner laid out on the salt pan at R900 a person for two to eight guests, and a picnic out on the red dunes. They also take paid volunteers, at 650 US dollars a week with a two week minimum.
Their own directions are fifteen minutes from Askham on the Red Dune Route, following the route rather than the park gate turn-off, and they warn you themselves that they are not on the tar road.
Founded in 2014, the Chayah Kalahari Project NPC is dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and rewilding Kalahari meerkats threatened by the illegal pet trade and habitat loss.
