There is no photograph of Khomani San anywhere that we may use. Rather than borrow somebody else's, this is our own satellite imagery of the ground it stands on.
Khomani San
A walk with San trackers into older knowledge, booked through the community's own office
Not a member. A stop
The Khomani San are the people whose land this is, and the association's map lists them as a cultural experience you book before you arrive. Their own site tells the story plainly: the land claim was won on Human Rights Day in 1999 under Dawid Kruiper, and six farms came back to the community. One of those six is Erin Game Ranch, which is a member of this route in its own right and is on this site with its own page. Petrus Vaalbooi has been the traditional leader since 2018.
What you actually book is a walk. Their trackers and guides take you out on the traditional farms of Witdraai and Erin, for an hour or for a whole day, and they build it around what you want to see: tracking animals, the medicinal plants, a heritage trail, or all three together. Their site says the guides are certified under the National Qualifications Framework and that the trackers work freelance, so a walk is arranged with a person rather than bought off a shelf. At Witdraai there is traditional dancing and storytelling by the elders as well, on arrangement, and there is a fee for it.
Book it through the community's own office at Askham. Dirk Pienaar is the tourism officer and bookings@khomanisan.com is the address on their own site and on Retha's sheet. They ask you to book in advance, and they say full payment may be asked for when you do.
Walks and trails are conducted on the traditional farms of Witdraai and Erin.
